How to Choose the Right Vacuum Cleaner

How to Choose the Right Vacuum Cleaner

When it comes to house cleaning, there is one thing I cannot imagine my life without, a great quality vacuum cleaner. Throughout the years I have tried quite a few, and have to say that there in not one product that could be perfect for everyone.

“Hoover” was one of the new words I learnt when I worked as an Au-pair for an English family in Bury (near Manchester) many years ago. At school I learnt the expression a vacuum cleaner, but I loved the shorter version much better.

Back then I had no idea that Hoover was actually a brand’s name, and the fact people have been using it to call a vacuum cleaner speaks for itself. It must be one of the best, otherwise why would people be doing it?

In our family home we have lots of surfaces to clean. Having 2 small children at home means I vacuum the carpets 2 to 3 times a week, and the tiles in the kitchen and the wooden floors in the hallway and living room even more often.

I do not think it is a luxury to own not one, but 2 vacuum cleaners these days. A very different story to the first few decades of the 19th century!

My most favourite vacuum cleaner is our cordless vacuum cleaner that is super easy to use, lightweight, hangs on a wall in our garage. It can be even used by my 3-year-old after cleaning our hamster’s cage! It’s great for a quick clean-up, but I would not recommend it for very large areas as the battery lasts about 10-15 minutes.

When it comes to vacuuming all the carpets upstairs and in our loft, I always go for our cylinder vacuum cleaner. Despite upright vacuum cleaners being the most popular in the UK, we went for the cylinder option as it’s much easier to store underneath the stairs to the loft. It is also much easier to manoeuvre around the furniture and the cord retracts into the cylinder. Maybe you have to empty the bin more often, but I don’t mind doing so.

Choosing the right vacuum cleaner is not the easiest task as there is so much to choose from. Make sure you know what are the important criteria for you, and read reviews.
