Originally I was about to go for another creative post, including Isabelle, but then I thought she probably doesn’t know much about surviving or what that means. This week I am going to tell you about someone I know and love, someone who has survived cancer.
I don’t think I have ever mentioned it on my blog before, but this is a great opportunity to share this story. It is about daddy’s nan, who was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago, when we were still living in Sydney almost 7 years ago. Unfortunately she decided not to tell anyone except grandad, so even daddy’s sister, who was living in London and was visiting her and grandad on a regular basis, had no idea. We could never understand why she and grandad didn’t want to share it with their two closest people, but we were trying to understand that maybe they were trying to protect us from all the stress … but isn’t it what a family is here for? To give you the support and help when you really need it? Anyway, nan had the operation done, and only a few weeks after that they told us. I am happy to say that nan is still with us, 7 years on, battling with huge amount of pain every day. She is very strong, and I wish I was like that at the age of 92!
Unfortunately when we decided to move back to London 7 years ago, they also made a decision to move to Northern Ireland. Again, we couldn’t understand that, as where we live now is just 5 mins from their old house. We wanted to help them and look after them… and they just left, we were trying to persuade them to stay, but they just didn’t want to listen. We would have loved seeing them every week, helping them with shopping, and all the other things they need carers for. We try and visit them as often as possible. Luckily they have a friend there who helps them a lot.
Nan, we love you and wish you a lot of strenght, hope the pain goes away and you stay with us for many more years.

illness in others makes us feel useless. maybe just knowing someone cares is enough. x

To be honest, I don’t know what I would be doing in her situation… maybe it is different as she is a grandparent not a parent
